Happy’s story

Happy Kamwevu’s journey from rural Zambia to university graduate, and his mission to bring change where it’s needed most

I come from a small village called Kisasa in the countryside. I am the seventh youngest of nine children, and my parents are farmers who struggle to make ends meet. Despite their financial difficulties, they always encourage us to pursue an education and follow our dreams. I attended a small primary school in the village, where the facilities were basic and the teachers were overworked and underpaid. Despite these challenges, I was a bright and hardworking student and I excelled in my studies. I was fuelled by a burning desire to escape the poverty that surrounded me and make a better life for my family and myself.

When I completed my primary education, I was determined to continue my studies. I applied for and was awarded a scholarship at Sentinel school. This was a significant turning point for me, as it opened a completely new world of opportunities. I worked tirelessly at secondary school, immersing myself in my studies and taking advantage of every opportunity that came my way. I participated in extracurricular activities, joined the school’s debate team and even started a peer-tutoring programme to help my fellow students who were struggling with their studies.

“My education has given me the potential to bring about meaningful and sustainable change”

My hard work and prayers paid off and when the time came for me to apply for university, I received a university scholarship offer from the Trident Foundation. At Cavendish University in Lusaka, I pursued a BSc Development Studies. It was a challenge to adjust to life in the city and the rigours of my course, but I was determined to succeed and graduated at the top of my class.

I have a passion to make a positive impact in the world. I am particularly drawn to the idea of working in villages and communities, where development and progress are often needed the most. My education has given me the potential to bring about meaningful and sustainable change in these areas.
