Andrew’s journey

From volunteer to educator, Andrew grew through training, reflection, and mentorship.

Before joining the Educore Academy professional development programme, I volunteered as a teacher. While I was passionate about education, I lacked structured training and clear direction. I was doing my best but knew there was more I could become, with the right guidance, support, and professional development.

Today, my career has taken a meaningful leap forward from a volunteer teacher to a confident professional in a leadership role. I am the Lead in Computer Science at an excellent secondary school. I have a Cambridge Diploma in Teaching and Learning which empowered me in the classroom and beyond. I now contribute to shaping the curriculum, mentoring other teachers, and leading initiatives that promote effective use of technology in education.

My time with Educore Academy was nothing short of life changing. From the very beginning, the programme felt like a supportive home for aspiring educators. The programme coordinator was not only kind and encouraging but also played a key role in shaping how I approach my teaching practice. She was hands-on, mentoring us, checking in regularly, and helping us build the habits of reflective teachers. She taught us how to reflect meaningfully after every lesson, helping us see what went well and what could be improved. This habit has stuck with me and has become one of the most powerful tools in my professional growth. I now reflect after every lesson so I can continuously improve and adapt my teaching to meet the needs of my learners.

What also stood out was the practice-based approach. Instead of just learning theories, we were immersed in real classrooms, observing, experimenting, and teaching with guidance from experienced mentors. My mentor played a huge role, providing constant feedback, encouragement, and constructive advice that helped me grow quickly and confidently. I was also surrounded by a group of passionate, hardworking, and joyful teacher interns. We supported one another, laughed, reflected, and overcame challenges together. That community spirit made all the difference.

Educore Academy reshaped how I understand teaching. I used to think teaching was all about the teacher delivering content. But I now realise that effective teaching starts with the learners. Students are not blank slates, they come into the classroom with prior knowledge, ideas, and real-life experiences that should be acknowledged and built upon. I’ve learned how to make learning active, relevant, and inclusive. I regularly use active learning strategies, such as group tasks, peer discussions, and inquiry-based learning, to get learners thinking, talking, and taking ownership of their learning. I’ve also become more reflective in my practice, constantly evaluating what works and how to improve.

I no longer see myself just as someone who teaches, I see myself as a learning designer, a mentor, and a changemaker. I walk into class with confidence, clarity, and purpose, knowing how to engage my learners and help them grow.
